Talk to Old Friends

Let’s keep it short for this Monday morning. If you have to get up early try to make it pleasant by reaching out to old friends and family members. In this digital age humans are spending less and less time actually engaged with another human being. This can lead to issues with depression and anxiety.

Whether or not we like to admit it, humans are social creatures and we need human contact. Social media is separating us from the live energy transfer that happens when we connect with a living human instead of our digital device. Yeah energy transfer. Plants do it and so do humans. So this morning call and old friend or loved one. See if you can have coffee or lunch. Get reconnected and enjoy your morning.

Make a List

The morning is a great time to use the old grey matter. The brain actually works a little better in the mornings. This is a great time to improve your day by making a list while the mind is at optimal performance. Lists are a great way to organize your day. They have the added bonus to allow you to see what you have accomplished.


I used to be so annoyed at making list. But as I’ve gotten older its becoming my best friend. I simply have to much to do. Without my lists I feel overwhelmed and non-productive. I can’t figure out what I did with my day. Or I’ll get home and realize I forgot to do something work a deadline.


Having a set list helps you to be more productive, focused, and less stressed. The less time you spend spinning your wheels in the morning the better. The very act of writing helps you to think about ways if tackling each entry. The list can be anything. My list today is a self care checklist; drop off paper work, high tail it to an acupuncture treatment, my favorite eyebrow place is near by, I have a massage scheduled, and then a tea meeting. What’s on your list?

Get Creative

How are your mornings? How do you charge up your batteries? Most of us just jump right into our day without taking time out for ourselves. On long mornings I like to get creative. There is something about the satisfaction of saying “I made this.” Especially years down the road, when you still have a functional piece.colouredhands

Arts and crafts are a wonderful distraction from some of the worries in life. Whether you’re making pottery or jewelry, coloring, crocheting, sewing, painting, knitting, woodworking, beading, candle making, body products, or any of the many other forms of arts & crafts, it’s possible to gain a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. The methodical process of making most things is:


  • meditative
  • empowering
  • improves mental agility
  • makes you a better student
  • improves depression
  • alleviates stress
  • improves hand-eye coordination

This is why “adult” coloring books are all the rage. So the next time you have a long morning or facing a long day add a little creativity to the mix. You are the most important factor of every day. Remember to be nourishing to yourself. #getpoked.

Get Enough Sleep

Nothing can replace enough sleep. After all, how can you have a perfect morning if you are waking up exhausted? Most of my clients simply don’t get sleep. I’m not talking about strictly the insomnia patients. We live in an on the go, constantly overstimulated, high stress, rather polluted, and very demanding society. We work all day, are constantly bombarded by the demands of our electronic devices. We spend hours in traffic, or hours in front of the internet/cell phone/video games…. and with all this on the go, the typical American is only getting about 6.8 hours of sleep. Add Some Love to Your Bath

Ok so I do some times have long lazy mornings. Sometimes I have to invent a super long lazy morning. I love a good relaxing bath. Some people are aware of the benefits of adding Epsom salts to bath water; but that’s just the beginning. Honestly, the list of things you can add to your bath is ridiculously long. One of the most over looked are flowers, herbs, and minerals.bath12

The first time I ever healed anyone it
was a newborn with “colic.” I worked with the father and I could see this family falling
apart after several weeks of not sleeping and dealing with a constantly cry child. I had just learned about chamomile and lavender as calming herbs. I gave him a bag of both.  The prescription? Make a strong tea and add a little to the babies bath. Worked like magic.

Ok , so true the experts say there are benefits to bathing at night. Including helping you sleep and produce more melatonin. But, there are entire cultural traditions revolving around baths including Korean, Russian, Finnish. We forget that the skin is highly absorbent. How are your mornings? How you start your day can make such an impact on your general well-being. The journey of perfect mornings is about finding ways to invest some love and light into yourself before tackling your day. We take for granted the impact of daily life stress as it accumulates insidiously in the body.

The little aches and pains that have been so ignored you don’t even they are there. I have been professionally doing bodywork for 8 years; everyone has aches and pains they don’t know are there. Everyone. So the next time you can, schedule yourself some morning body love.

Take a Moment for Your Skin

Good morning. I hope by now that taking an extra moment in your morning is becoming more normal. After all you are your own MVP. One of the over looked MVPs of the body is the skin.

Find the extra 5-7 minutes to rub lotion on your skin especially in the cold winter months. Your skin is the bodies largest organ and a major player in your immune system. Just the act of rubbing yourself down with oil helps to increase circulation, increases energy, activates your lymphatic system, alleviates stress, fights signs of aging, and can help you sleep better.

If you really want to go for the gusto you can give yourself a body scrub in the shower. You can use a homemade or store-bought creations. You can also purchase a variety of scrub mitts, body brushes, and loofahs that will exfoliate and invigorate your skin.

Dermis appreciation and care can be as simple or as elaborate as you desire and have the time for. On long lazy weekends, you can relax in a bath with, salts, teas, oils, or heck even milk honey. Do whatever you like. There is no right or wrong when it chines to self-care.  Then follow up with a scrub and a good lotion before doing the regular old errands. Make time for you.

How are your mornings these days? Mine have been pretty awesome. Folks have asked me why haven’t mentioned acupuncture as a part of a perfect morning. Well, it can be. I just didn’t want to seem like I was playing favorites.

Whatever you need to improve your morning acupuncture can help. Acupuncture is great for relieving stress, depression, and anxiety. Acupuncture is wonderful for mental clarity, focus, increasing energy, and taking care of aches and pains. Besides, most people take a really good nap during treatment and who couldn’t use that? Get Your Move On

How goes your gradual shift into perfect mornings? And let me be clear. I know they are not usually perfect. But with practice, patience, and perseverance you can cultivate mornings that are more nourishing and peaceful. Mornings that help you get moving through your day instead of making you wish for a do-over. Moving is a great way to give your temple a little love. Now yes, I’m a gym bunny. I’ve been powerlifting since I was 16 years old. But that’s not what I mean. Any movement that you love will do. I had a colleague who literally learned to fly on the trapeze. I still admire her, but as I’m afraid of heights I’m never going to bother to learn lol.

Pick something you want to do.  Not something that’s supposed to be “good” for you.  Hula hoop, walk, swim, belly dance, tao qi, yoga, a 30-day challenge, ribbon dancing, burlesque, pole dancing, old gym stretches, horseback riding, racketball, katas, forms, dance, golf, kayaking, etc etc …it doesn’t matter.  Just pick something that sounds fun and exciting. And you know what? If you hate it in a week, pick something else. Because this is not about exercise.

This is about being happy to move your body. This is about the euphoria you feel after a good body moving session. This is about the act of moving your body, in a way that just makes you happy, a part of your day. Perfect because you took the time to love you before taking on the rest of the world. In this world of movers and shakers get your move on and then go shake up the world. #getpoked
